Here's How To Make Success In 2020 Completely Inevitable
"People who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed." - Tony Robbins
2019 is nearly over.
How far have you come?
How far did you want to go?
Have you been tracking the difference? Writing about it?
The single most important thing you need to do, now, is reflect.
2019 may have carried several valuable gains in some areas.
You probably grew.
That, in itself, is progress.
You can compound that progress by surveying everything, success and failures, and asking:
What do I now know, that I needed to know, that I didn't know before?
How can I use this new growth and learning to my advantage?
2020 can absolutely be an amazing year.
It can be the best year of your life.
It's up to you.
The remainder of this article will detail what key things you should be doing as 2019 closes to prepare your mindset and your body properly to move into 2020 with power, and then I'll share the exact strategy I'm using to personally pull ahead on New Year's Day, and the 365 days that follow it.
You don't have to wait until late in the year to accomplish some great things. You can make more progress in January towards your ideal life than most people make, ever.
But your focus will need to be very refined, very precise.
And, I'm going to give you a challenge.
In The Remainder Of 2019
1. Clean Your Space
"Clarity is essential. Knowing exactly what you want builds your self-confidence immeasurably." - Brian Tracy
Last week, I got mildly injured and had to stay in my room taking it easy for a couple of days.
It was, for the most part, a dull and frustrating experience.
But there was an unintended side effect I didn't anticipate that I'm hugely grateful for.
Literally stopping, looking around, and slowing down gave me an immense amount of clarity.
I was seeing the forest, not the trees.
I was able to completely organize and clean my spaces, my bookshelves, my room, and my entire environment.
I did some mental organizing as well.
I was able to evaluate each area of my life and see the levels at which I want to attain.
And then I was able to precisely determine what things would help me have a breakthrough to the next level in each of those areas.
I journaled. I pondered. I planned.
I became dedicated to my future.
I became focused on who I was going to be.
I finished recovering with a great amount of focus on who I'm going to become.
I even refined many of the ideas for this article simply by giving my body and brain a few days to rest.
While you recover, while you step away, you give yourself time to recharge. To think.
The end of this year is a time to recharge. A time to get ready to sprint in the new year.
Organize your environment, so that nothing will pull you back on January 1st. If your room is a mess, that's the echoes of failure already in your face before you have a chance to make progress. This will destroy your confidence and erode the momentum you could have made.
Making small power-moves like this will set you up for an inevitable win when 2020 comes. You'll already be living how you want to live.
2. Acquire Materials That Will Change Everything
"Rich people have small TVs and big libraries, and poor people have small libraries and big TVs." - Zig Ziglar
This year, I'm on track to read 100 books.
Learning this much information, and using it, dramatically changed my life.
Reading is not complicated.
It just requires that you put it ahead of other distracting things, like browsing through your electronics.
A good rule of thumb you can implement immediately is to open an e-book on your phone, instead of using social media, when you're on it.
Suddenly, while other people are using their devices to simply get by, you're getting ahead.
While others are distracting themselves, you're pulling yourself towards a brighter future.
You'll get through dozens of books just by substituting your favorite social media apps with the Kindle app, or similar.
You also have more time in the evening than you realize.
Instead of watching dozens of weekly TV hours like the average American, you could read several incredible books which empower you with new perspective, new action, and new knowledge.
As Jim Rohn would say, the book you don't read will never serve you.
If you're not making learning and growth through reading a priority in 2020, and borrowing or buying the books now that you know could make the biggest difference when the new year starts, you're not setting yourself up for success.
Personally, I'll be reading and re-reading several books to give me clarity, and help me focus on fewer things.
Among the titles on my shelf for the new year are Deep Work, The ONE Thing, Essentialism, Linchpin, Digital Minimalism, and Stillness Is The Key.
These are all books which will help you clarify and focus on what really matters.
Acquire the books that will help you make sense of the oncoming 12 months.
There are probably several you already know you should be reading.
I also gave you my personal list, if you need more.
You should also be writing your thoughts, dreams, desires, and plans.
Your brain gets full very often. Outsource to paper. You'll be very refreshed.
Get some blank notebooks for you to write your goals in 2020.
They will make all the difference.
They are your sacred space to dream, create, and connect new ideas.
Buy the right books. Get some journals.
You'll be able to plan and learn very effectively.
3. Spend Time With Your Loved Ones
"Life is not accumulation, it is about contribution." - Stephen Covey
One of the most rewarding things about advancing how far as a person you can develop, is the experiences you can share with others.
You become wealthy so you can give.
You become strong to lift others up.
You become wise so that you can inspire.
The biggest reward comes from contribution.
Taking this time during the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 to radically advance yourself isn't only amazing for you.
It's the absolute best thing you could do for others.
You'll be happier and more pleasant to be around when you're living life the way you want to.
Take 1-2 hours a day, I myself am taking advantage of the time early in the morning before others are up, to better yourself. To craft your vision.
Get the books and the notebooks you're going to need.
Do some writing and evaluating on the lessons you have learned.
Clean your room and organize your spaces before the year ends.
If you just do these few things, and spend all the rest of your time in the day during the holiday break making beautiful experiences with your family, everything will be so much easier in 2020.
Igniting 2020 is only a few days away.
Make it special.
In 2020
1. Make Success Inevitable
What if success was a foregone conclusion?
Successful people don't lay out the target and then strive to bring themselves up to it.
Instead, they consciously design their environments, their identities, their media choices, the people around them, and the conditions so that success is a foregone conclusion.
Rather than trying to jump to reach a new level, they're precisely targeted on sprinting towards the goal.
It's just a game of removing everything that conflicts with their ultimate desires.
You can't get distracted by anything else on the side.
Likewise, you need to reconsider:
Are you acting as if success is a foregone conclusion?
The successful you isn't somebody who can just appear in the future. You have to be that person today.
You have their attitude.
Their work ethic.
Their vision.
And then, you'll start to see the results of your future self.
Most people aren't acting as if the new year will be successful as a foregone conclusion.
They're operating from a place of failure and then hoping to be successful.
This is a terrible strategy.
Most people begin the new year hungover, depressed, and completed distracted with parades and the news.
Is this how a great performance begins?
Think about it.
If you really want an extra push of progress:
- Go to bed early.
- Rise at 4 or 5 a.m. on New Year's Day.
- Do the powerful morning routine you know will make the difference.
- Get out your journals. Create, vision, plan, and dream in a creative state.
- Read the books you previously got.
- Begin the day with powerful exercise.
You'll be starting the new year with momentum, when most people are at a complete standstill.
You'll have immense clarity about where, exactly, you're going in the new year.
Newton taught us that an object in motion tends to stay in motion. An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
What type of motions do you want to be making on January 1st?
The beginning, the start, matters.
If 2020 is about making as much movement as possible towards who you want to be, you need to have massive momentum.
Most people literally start the year completely exhausted and hungover.
They're at a complete standstill. They're even making backwards progress in the new year.
But not you. You're going to make waves.
2. Set Powerful Goals
The practice of setting new year's resolutions is overly common.
These create a problem.
Firstly, their very nature makes them impossible to fulfill. Most resolutions are eternal habits with no end date.
Resolutions can never be hit. There's never a date in the future when you achieve them.
And, if you miss even one day, you're done. You're toast. Just give up already.
This is a very dangerous way of viewing progress. It makes you frustrated, depressed, and with no motivation very quickly.
Don't make lifelong habits. Your habits will grow and evolve over your life. You'll need different ones at different times.
Secondly, even if you are good at keeping your habits, what are they actually doing for you?
Do they inspire some future version of yourself, or are they merely stuff that exists to fill your already overcrowded life?
Are you exercising with the intent of actually creating a result?
Or are you convinced that for some reason, it will make you healthy?
"Where there is no vision, the people perish." - Proverbs 29:18
Habits are completely useless if they don't inspire a future, compelling version of yourself. Habits are weak.
Instead, realize that creating a compelling goal requires habits, automatically.
So, don't set any habits.
Have a big and compelling future that forces you to design your habits to match your new goals.
Set big goals.
As an example, making the decision to become a New York Times bestselling author would require you to write daily. It's the vision you must create. Hone your craft. It would require you become very good at running a personal brand, and building an audience to launch your book to.
You wouldn't need to declare a habit of writing every day because you would automatically require yourself to do it, anyway, as part of the overarching vision.
It's scary to achieve a big result. But, you can. You just have to start thinking on a different level, and stop making excuses for why your situation is different.
3. Tap Into Your New Identity
"What is your ONE GOAL?
Do you love that goal?
Would you really trade your current life for that goal?" - Benjamin Hardy
A different life requires that you become a new person.
Are you willing to trade what you have for who you want?
Most people say yes without thinking. We all want the dream life.
But there are things about the average day in the life of a highly successful person that are very different.
Some of those things you may gladly embrace.
Some, you may not be aware of.
Oftentimes, success isn't everything you expect. It's very different to experience it vs. observe it.
When you make rapid transformation and growth, you are forced to change your surroundings, your day-to-day living, and your environment.
You cannot upgrade as a person while everything else around you remains the same.
You must truly be willing to embrace your new life in 2020, and welcome all the changes that come your way.
You must be willing to put in the work, and run the miles, that your new identity takes.
As Bo Eason says, when you open up a new vision for who you want to be, you also attract all the obstacles that are now going to stand in your way.
You have to be okay with that.
Conclusion
"What's the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" - Gary Keller
I recently received The ONE Thing for Christmas.
It is a groundbreaking book. If you have already read it, it's time to pull it out during this important interchange between years, and between decades.
Your energy and your power multiplies when you narrow your focus. Your actions simply need to be aligned, and congruent.
2020 is about doing fewer things.
Eliminating distractions.
Being more present.
Focusing in, on the one lever that can and will truly change your life.
You are holistic.
How you perform in one area tends to translate in others.
Thus, if you make an incredible commitment to one area of your life that needs the most growth, and stick to that commitment, you'll start to see ripple effects.
Your health, finances, relationships, career, impact, and influence will all exponentially multiply if you just find the one thing you need to do.
What's your one thing in January?
What's your one thing for 2020?
Go do that one thing. Crush it.
