"SUCCESS" is Irrelevant. Do These 3 Things Instead.
"When you know the art of productivity, you will stop racing to get things done that do not serve your bigger future. You will see why successful people seem to get done five times as much as the people who are 'just busy.'" - Dean Graziosi
When I recently learned that I could get any result and become the person I wanted to be, it was actually very scary.
I had just started meeting weekly with partners to report on my goals and progress towards the life that I wanted.
Within the span of a few months, I started making bigger and bigger commitments. I started playing bigger. And I realized that I could literally achieve anything I wanted.
You can too, with the right systems.
Yet, this is scary.
Success is scary.
It requires trading who you are for somebody else.
Most people's imaginations of success and what success actually looks like are two very different things. Think about the goals you've achieved and the targets you've hit.
There is a lot of safety in dreaming. Research shows that anticipation carries higher emotional amplification than the event itself.
When it's inside your mind, everything is perfect.
You don't have to address the hard questions, the problems, the obstacles, the competition, the fatigue, the late nights, the early mornings, the panic, and the uncertainty.
Most people are scared of a result.
Most people are therefore scared of accountability.
Accountability equals results.
When you use the right tools to force yourself to do what you said you were going to do, when you said you were going to do it, at the level of quality you said you were going to do it at, then all excuses become irrelevant.
This article is intended for those who want to inevitably get a result in their life. Not just an upgrade in ideas or concepts, but a tangible, physical result.
When you know the right systems, you can achieve anything you want.
There is no second option.
There is no plan B.
There is only reaching, reaching farther, and then having what you truly desire.
Is that what you really want?
Then follow these 3 things very carefully.
1. Why Relationships Trump Motivation
"Having an accountability partner is an unfair advantage." - Benjamin Hardy
No matter how powerful you think your motivation is, it's not going to last. Four out of five people quit their goals in January by the time it's February.
Success is the long game. It takes years to truly master something. And most people just aren't willing to make that kind of sacrifice.
Instead of falling for this trap, why not eliminate the option to quit on yourself?
Why not make self-motivation and self-starting unnecessary?
What if, instead of investing all your motivation in yourself, you invested it in someone else?
The truth is, other people aren't quite as emotionally tied to your goals as you are. They might be empathetic, but they won't be nearly as excited by your successes or depressed by your failures as you.
They're more logical. They aren't in their own way. They can see the bird's-eye view.
And thus, they'll be able to calmly remind you of your own dedication, your commitment, and the results you want.
They won't let you hide when you want to give up, quit, and go astray.
You must show up.
This is why having an accountability partner is essential.
They aren't cheerleaders nor are they counselors.
They are accountability partners.
What matters is they hold you to what you said you were going to do.
It's easy to lie to yourself. But with others, there is no pretending. They have a written, spoken, and maybe even signed record of what you said you were going to do.
When you outsource your motivation, your commitment, and your decisions to a partnership in this way, you don't have to worry about anything else.
You know what you must do. You know why you must do it.
You then learn how to do it.
And then you act on that learning.
No guesswork. No willpower. No buts. No there wasn't time.
Motivation is like fire.
Your own fire is like kindling. You get excited in January and then it burns out.
Accountability partnerships are like clean fuel. They aren't going anywhere. They never go out. You don't need to go out and find motivation by attending seminars and reading books. It's already there, invested in the mutual relationship.
And then you go get results.
Get an accountability partner today.
2. How To Completely Eliminate Confusion
"You will never change your life until you change something you do daily." - Darren Hardy
Tracking is the doorway to seeing results.
When you track something, your brain notices. Your subconscious is constantly obsessed with how you can make your numbers better when it knows what they are.
A wise mentor once told me that the simple lesson to know your numbers had caused him to become very successful. Because he understood exactly where he was in relation to where he wanted to go, charting a path became very simple.
If you fundamentally understand where you are, then it's easy to see how far you have to go until you get there.
When you're honest with yourself, you don't get confused easily.
When you're accountable, you don't give up easily.
The driver behind extraordinary results is accomplishing a few things well, automatically.
Decide what you truly want, and then design a system and a routine around that thing, so that doing it becomes automatic.
When you become committed enough to do something daily, everything changes.
In The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy found that successful people are very good at tracking. They look at their calendar daily and cross off each day if they practiced the most important habit for them personally. A string of X's starts to appear.
There is only one rule: don't break the chain.
You must be willing to do consistently what average people are only willing to do sporadically.
Print out a tracker and you'll inevitably start to see the magic happen.
Track what you want to improve.
What you focus on expands.
3. How To Use 1 Massive Goal To Create Multiple Changes
"I realized that to be productive, I just needed to get great at a few things. If I could do these things at the highest level, I could be successful." - Dean Graziosi
Dr. Marshall Goldsmith once told of an executive who was making millions of dollars and had risen to the top of his company yet somehow was unsatisfied. As it turns out, he had rather horrible people skills.
After working together, they were able to eliminate the interpersonal behavior flaws that the executive had. Both his work and his home life changed.
He underwent the transformation as a whole, not just in one area.
Your life is no different. Yes, your life is comprised of multiple areas, but they influence each other. You cannot compartmentalize.
Instead of focusing on every little thing you need to do to improve, identify the one thing that's holding you trapped and hurting your potential.
This one objective becomes the focal point for your entire life.
This is the glass ceiling you need to shatter to rise to a new level.
You have to be more careful about how you spend your time.
Who you spend that time with.
How present you are in those moments.
This one goal changes your health, your finances, your faith, and everything else.
By raising the bar on one thing, you raise the bar in everything else.
Suddenly, you realize that by showing up in the way you currently are, you can't achieve that goal.
You need to make small but significant shifts in each area of life before you can get to that one thing.
Then, you realize you've gotten everything when you only focused on one thing.
"The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything." - Warren Buffett
It's time to start paring down.
It's time to practice what coach and speaker Greg McKeown calls essentialism.
Set one goal, such that by achieving it, everything else in your life would fall into place.
What is your keystone?
Conclusion
You don't have to keep finding motivation to go get what you truly desire.
When you outsource your one goal to people and paper, it becomes hard to forget about it.
You start to focus on that one thing exclusively.
And you see a shift happen. You become more creative and connected.
More opportunities arise.
It's by having the right system that you can do anything.
Not by having temporary excitement.
Go master what you do.
Create something real.
